Romeo and Juliet
Description
The classic story of a forbidden love affair between two young people from rival families, by William Shakespeare, adapted to the context of Brazilian popular culture by director Gabriel Villela. The production by Grupo Galpão, from the state of Minas Gerais, which has been making noteworthy theater in Brazil for over thirty years, is filled with humor and language inspired by the countryside of Minas Gerais. Regarded by critics as the most striking rendition of “Romeo and Juliet” in Brazilian contemporary theater, the play was performed 250 times in 10 different countries, the highlight being a short season at the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.
