The Lady from the Sea

Description

The Lady from the Sea revolves around the drama of Élida Wangel, a woman who married a widowed doctor, father of two daughters, and moved to a small town. Dr. Wangel loves her deeply, but she has not learned how to love him back, since she is tormented by the memory of a sailor who promised to return and marry her one day. Still as a young girl, she got caught up in a fleeting and passionate romance with this man, almost a stranger to her. Idle and dependent, her only joy is to swim in the sea. Élida’s attraction to the sea symbolizes her quest and sacrifice of personal freedom. The plot depicts Élida’s struggle between her life as a bourgeois housewife married to an obscure village doctor, and letting herself go on an adventure with a stranger, completely unknown to her, who can maybe give her the freedom she desperately craves.
