The first staging of Pau Miró’s Jùcature (Players) is the winner of Butaca 2012 prize award for the best text written in Catalan and was successfully staged last season in Barcelona, under the direction of the same Mirò, at Teatre Lliure, managed by Lluís Pasqual.
The four men on stage, played by Enrico Ianniello, Renato Carpentieri, Tony Laudadio and Luciano Saltarelli, share tragicomic stories about their frustrations and failures while playing cards, waiting for one last big burst of life.
The story takes place in an old apartment, a place where failure is the norm, not the exception. The money has long been gone, as well as any chance of personal success. But just when they are about to hit rock bottom, the four decide to risk it all, rouge et noir, and then the game becomes dangerous. As we have seen in Chiòve – successfully staged several years ago by Teatri Uniti (also translated by Enrico Ianniello), the players are grotesque masks who gather, in times of crisis, to gamble with the only capital they have left: their loneliness, their irony, their inability to understand.
“Sensational. A magically conducted quartet of poetry and irony, with perfect dialogues, in a theatrical language that makes you feel ecstatic.” --Sara Chiappori, La Repubblica
“... a text full of nuances, offering a great comic potential, with an authentic and touching human depth ... the actors are magnificent ...”-
Francesco Durante, Corriere della Sera
“A well written text, with well founded, funny and dramatic lines, entrusted to these excellent actors, who do not flirt with the audience, but build characters whose words and gestures go beyond what is actually said, making us understand the reasons and the stories, the driving forces and the meaning of their present lives (...). Four talented players keeping a difficult balance (...). Long and well deserved applause in the end.” -Giulio Baffi, La Repubblica

The Liar is a famous comedy, full of fulminating gags. The misconstructions giving life to the story are both the result of a joyful theatrical taste, and of an entire human pathology: the protagonist, Lelio, with his never-ending lies, triggers a perverse and inexorable mechanism that will ultimately ruin him, violently tearing him away from the society into which he desperately tries to fit.
